Takelight Screen Recorder: Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-10-14
Who we are
Takelight is a browser extension published by Exochard, the publisher named on its store listings. Exochard decides what data Takelight handles and is responsible for it. Contact: [email protected]
This policy covers the extension, the shared Exochard API it talks to (exotools-api.exochard.workers.dev, hosted on Cloudflare; older versions call gigscope-api.exochard.workers.dev, which forwards to it) and the website https://takelight-recorder.pages.dev, including its roadmap page. It describes every kind of data Takelight collects, how it is used, where it is stored, how long it is kept and who it is shared with. Takelight collects no data that is not listed here.
What the extension does
It records the screen, a window or a browser tab that you choose in Edge's share dialog, plus your microphone and camera if you switch them on, and saves the result as a video file on your computer. For a tab recording it can add zoom, click and keystroke effects, blur sensitive information on the page, and build a written step guide. A built-in editor cuts the recording and makes captions on your device.
Summary of the data Takelight handles
- Authentication information: your Pro license key, sent to the API to check it, only when you activate Pro and then at most once a day.
Takelight does not collect usage statistics, your browsing history, health, financial or payment information, location, or website content. Screen, window, tab, microphone and camera content, and the clicks, scrolls and page text read while you record, are processed on your computer and never uploaded or shared. A video file you import is analysed on your computer only, to propose the steps of a guide: its pictures are compared and, if you choose, its speech is read by the speech model in the extension package. Nothing leaves the device. It does not sell data, does not use it for advertising, and does not use it to decide creditworthiness or for any purpose unrelated to recording your screen.
Data stored only in your browser
These stay in your browser's extension storage and are never sent to us:
- Your recordings. When you use "Record this tab", each recording has a small event file next to it with the clicks, cursor position, scrolls and shortcut keys of that tab, with times, so the effects can be drawn and a step guide can be made. For a click or a burst of typing it also holds the name of what was clicked or typed into: the text of a button or link, or the label of a field. It holds no typed text and no value of any field: characters typed into a field are never read, and nothing at all is taken from password, card-number or one-time-code fields. Emails, phone numbers, card numbers and keys inside a name are masked. For a screen or window recording the file holds only a header line.
- Step guides you make from a tab recording: their titles, and one picture per step taken from your own recording. They are stored next to the recording and deleted with it. Exports and copies go where you paste or save them; nothing is uploaded.
- Guides you make with Start guide: a picture of the visible tab for each step, the page address and title in the step titles, and the labels of what you click or type into. They are stored next to your recordings and deleted with the guide. Nothing is uploaded.
- Video files you import: a copy of the file, kept next to the guide made from it with the step pictures. An imported video is not covered by the blur, so the guide page marks it as not reviewed until you tick that you went through it. The copy and the guide are deleted with the recording.
- Chapter names and times you add to a recording.
- If you use the editor: your cuts and, if you make captions, the transcript and its language, kept next to the recording so you can come back to them.
- Boxes, arrows, text and blurs you add to a guide's pictures, kept with the guide, and the logo, accent colour and footer of your brand kit.
- The list of recordings: name, date, length, size.
- Small thumbnails of your recordings, kept in the browser's database for the Recordings page.
- Your settings: effect and look settings, guide page size and document style, the position and tool of the drawing chip, the take number counter, the hints and trial notes you closed, and the what's-new flag.
- Counts of the Pro features you used, which fill the trial-end summary and are never sent.
- Your Pro license key and pass end date, if you activate Pro, and the start and end dates of the free trial.
You can delete a recording from the Recordings page. Uninstalling the extension deletes everything.
Permissions
- Storage and unlimited storage: to keep recordings and settings on your computer.
- Tab capture and active tab: to record the tab you start "Record this tab" on.
- Scripting: to add one script, packaged with the extension, to that tab while it is recorded. It sees clicks, cursor position, scrolls and shortcut keys and passes them to the recorder page on your computer. If you switch on the drawing tool (Alt+Shift+D), a second packaged script puts a transparent layer over the page for pen, highlighter and arrow strokes; the strokes stay in the page, are never sent anywhere, and the script only sends an empty signal to the recorder page to show it is still needed. If you switch on "Blur sensitive info", a packaged script reads the text of the page to find emails, numbers and keys and blurs them on the page; it sends nothing anywhere and puts the page back when the recording ends. At the start of a recording and after a page change, one 2 px grey square is added to the page for a moment and removed, so the tab sends a fresh picture; it holds no data. Every script is removed from the tab when the recording ends.
- Start guide: adds the same packaged script to the tab you press Start guide on, and takes a picture of that tab for each step. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- Optional access to all sites: asked when you press Start with "Follow this tab across sites" switched on, press Start guide, or press "Allow on all sites" when a recording pauses on another site, so the effects, the blur and the guide steps continue when the recorded tab moves to another site. Edge shows its own prompt; if this recording asked for it, the access is given back when the recording ends.
- The extension does not run on any website until you start a tab recording or press Start guide, and it reads no page content except the labels of what you click or type into, the text the blur needs to find emails, numbers and keys, and the picture of the tab you record or capture as a guide. Screen sharing is asked from you by Edge every time you start. Microphone and camera access is asked once; Edge remembers your answer until you change it in the site settings.
Data that leaves your browser, and why
License check (authentication information)
- What is sent: your license key, the product name, and a random id made when the extension was installed. Nothing else is sent. The id identifies nothing but that installation.
- When: when you activate Pro, and at most once a day after that while a pass is active. The 7-day trial starts and ends on your device and sends nothing.
- Why: to confirm the key is valid with Payhip, the seller of record for Pro passes, and to count each browser once, so entering the key again in the same browser never takes a second of its 3 seats.
- Where it is kept: the API keeps the list of install ids that use a key, filed under a one-way hash of the product name and key; the key itself is not stored. The list expires 400 days after the key was last checked.
Captions and the speech model (nothing is sent)
- What happens: captions are made on your computer by a speech model that is part of the extension package. The extension does not download the model or any other file when you make captions, and the sound of a recording never leaves the computer to be transcribed.
- Where it is kept: the transcript is stored in your browser next to the recording, as described above.
Uninstall page
When you remove the extension, the browser opens https://takelight-recorder.pages.dev/bye. The address carries nothing: no version, no id. The page links to the store page for a review and to our email address, and sends nothing.
Website roadmap page
The roadmap page at https://takelight-recorder.pages.dev/roadmap shows planned and shipped changes. Loading it asks the API for the list of items and sends only the product name. The website sets no cookies. It counts page views per page and country with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and keeps nothing that identifies you.
When you buy a pass
You buy Pro on Payhip, which handles the payment, your name, your email address and the license key under its own privacy policy. Payhip then sends the API a notice about the order. The API keeps the product code of the pass, the price, the currency, whether a coupon was used and the order number for 35 days, plus a daily count of sales for 400 days. Your name, email address, network address and license key are not stored by us.
Who we share data with
We share data only with the services that run Takelight, and only for the purposes above:
- Payhip, to check license keys and sell passes: https://payhip.com/privacy
- Cloudflare, which hosts the API and the website: https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/
We do not sell or rent data, do not share it with advertisers or data brokers, and do not transfer it for any other purpose. We would disclose data only if the law requires it.
How data is protected
All traffic between the extension, the API and the services above uses HTTPS. The API keeps license keys and network addresses only as one-way hashes.
Your choices and rights
- See or delete your local data: delete a recording from the Recordings page, or uninstall the extension to delete everything.
- Ask about a message you emailed us, or free a license seat: write to us at [email protected]. We answer within 30 days.
- If you live in the EU or the UK, you also have the rights the GDPR gives you, including the right to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
Takelight is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, we update this page and the date at the top. A change that adds a new kind of data ships only with an extension update whose store listing describes it.
